Chapter 9

I spoke to Alex the following morning, and she informed me that since it appeared as if Annie wasn’t going to remember who she was or where she was supposed to be, she was going to run her fingerprints and DNA in the hope that an ID would sift up to the surface. I also called and spoke to Colt, who informed me that he’d spoken with Annie’s doctor this morning, and while she still seemed confused, they hadn’t been able to find a physical reason for her disorientation. The doctor agreed to keep her one more night to give Colt and Alex time to figure out where Annie was supposed to be. If they couldn’t identify the woman, and she still couldn’t remember where she lived, they’d have no choice but to turn her over to the state.

It had occurred to me to follow up on the idea of having Dawson help me track down a blue house at the end of a road near a pond. I wasn’t sure if the place was real or a figment of Annie’s imagination, but if a house such as the one she described existed, then maybe I could find someone there who could help identify the woman in the hospital. Deciding to start with Dawson and his hacking and research skills, I texted him to let him know what I was after. He told me he’d see what he could do and text me right back. Thirty minutes later, he texted me with an address. He also said that Beck had come in when he was looking for the address of the blue house and requested that I wait until he could go with me to check out the house. Since the bookstore was slow this morning, I said I’d head to the Bistro and meet with both men there.

“Hey, Lou,” Shelby greeted me when I walked in through the front door of the best eatery in town. “Are you here for an early lunch?”

“Actually, I’m here to meet with Beck and Dawson. We exchanged texts, so they’re expecting me.”

She held out a hand, motioning me toward the bar. “By all means, go on back.”

When I arrived, I found Dawson sitting with Beck in his booth. Sitting nicely at Beck’s feet was Meatball, who looked up at me when I arrived but, otherwise, didn’t move.

Apparently, Dawson had used a map program that searched for geographical locations based on the set of criteria he input. There was just one blue house at the end of a road near a pond within twenty-five miles of the Bistro. We figured that must be the house Annie had been referring to, so Beck, Meatball, and I headed out to his car, which he’d parked in employee parking behind the Bistro.

The road where the blue house was located was actually a gravel drive. The only house on the gravel drive was a rundown blue house on a flat plot of land. Beck and I took a few minutes to get our bearings once we arrived.
